The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s fifth Music Director Finalist, Roger Kalia, will conduct the February Classics concert Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Victory Theatre at 7 PM. This is the final finalist competing for the position of EPO Music Director. Announcement of the next Music Director’s name will be Saturday, April 4, 2020.

Dynamic and innovative, Indian American conductor Roger Kalia is acclaimed by the press as “one to watch.” Respected collaborator with orchestras and artists alike, Kalia was named Music Director of Symphony New Hampshire in May 2019 and since July 2018 has served as Music Director of California’s Orchestra Santa Monica. Kalia is also Associate Conductor with the Pacific Symphony.

A versatile communicator, Kalia has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including singer Shayna Steele, Electronic Dance Music (EDM) duo MAKO, singer/songwriter Randy Newman, Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster David Kim, violinists Glenn Dicterow, Nikki and Timothy Chooi, percussionist Lisa Pegher, pianists Fei-Fei Dong and Misha Dichter, the B-52s, PROJECT Trio and the Brooklynbased electronic Indie band Balún.

A native of New York State, Kalia holds degrees from Indiana University, the University of Houston and SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music.

The evening’s concert begins with Zoltán Kodály’s Dances of Galanta, the exotic piece Kodály wrote after being inspired by a famous gypsy band. The picturesque Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3 concludes the evening’s program with Scottish dance and folk music flavors.

The concert will also feature guitar superstar Meng Su performing Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez which won her the gold medal and the distinction of being the first female guitarist to win the Parkening Competition. The extraordinarily beautiful Adagio makes the Concierto de Aranjuez one of the most popular of all time.

Multifaceted guitarist Meng Su is captivating audiences around the world with her stunning virtuosity and refined artistry. This season, she will perform solo recitals in Hong Kong, Glasgow, Baltimore, Houston, Santa Fe, Seattle and Beijing, and with her duo partner Yameng Wang in the Beijing Guitar Duo in a 10-city US tour in Spring, 2020. Guitar Magazine wrote that “she has already reached the status of a seasoned artist.”

Born in Qingdao, China, Meng Su began studying the guitar at the age of 5 and showed her talents from an early age under the guidance of Professor Chen Zhi at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. Meng Su won first-prize in numerous important international competitions in Europe, Asia and America. She obtained a Master’s Degree and an Artist Diploma with legendary guitarist Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Meng Su teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
