Scott Seaton, Conductor
Sterling Elliott, Cello
Michael Torke’s Ash is a unique and intriguing fusion of classical and pop music — Beethovenesque, but with a vibrant, contemporary sound.
Tchaikovsky’s graceful and popular Rococo Variations will showcase Sterling Elliott’s ability to play long, lyrical melodies and leap through virtuosic cadenzas, trills, and double stops. At age 19, Elliott was a first prize winner of the 2019 Sphinx Competition, aimed at the development and recognition of high school and college talent in the black and Latino communities.
Beethoven’s dynamic Fourth Symphony is fresh and spontaneous and contains themes that served as inspiration for other composers.

Aaron Copland’s quintessential American masterpiece, Appalachian Spring, perfectly captures the feeling of vast open spaces, hope, and the possibility of country life in an ideal America. The work popularized the Shaker folk song, “Simple Gifts.”
Concert Romanesc is a fine example of Ligeti’s folk style, drawing inspiration from memories of his Romainian Childhood and transforming the orchestra into a gigantic village band.
